COBRA - 11: Migration of PDP 11 to a regular PC

The COBRA-11 emulates a complete PDP-11 computer system on a PC platform. The solution requires no conversion or software changes! (i.e. Migration of ATLAS and HP-BASIC TPSs without code changes)

Together with the WinTE 7000 (optional) you can replace any instrument in your test system and still preserve 100% of your code.

The COBRA-11 is a turnkey system that emulates a complete PDP11 on a Windows PC (NT or Windows 2000). The PDP-11 CPU and memory are emulated by logic on the Co-Processor emulation card, and the PDP11 peripherals are emulated by mapping their functionality onto their most similar counterpart inside the Windows PC. Since the Co-Processor recognizes native PDP-11 binary instructions, the COBRA-11 will execute all existing PDP-11 software, regardless of the Operating System.

Peripheral devices on the PC emulate similar PDP-11 devices. For example, the PC's hard drive replaces the PDP-11 hard drive (RL02, RA81, etc.), the PC's COM ports replace the PDP11 serial mux cards (DZ11, DHV11, etc), the PC NIC emulates the PDP-11 Ethernet adapter (DEQNA , DELQA, etc), and so on. The PDP-11 code is executed as-is by the Co-Processor. The original PDP11 source code is not required!

For PDP11 systems with custom or proprietary QBUS/UNIBUS I/O cards that must remain with the system, we offer a rackmount chassis option which contains a built-in QBUS or UNIBUS backplan and an integrated Windows PC. A high speed Fibrechannel Adapter connects the QBUS/UNIBUS backplan slots to the Co-Processor Board. One compact, complete assembly will replace a roomful of old hardware!

Technology Highlights
• Replaces legacy PDP-11 systems transparently with modern, PC-based technology
• COBRA-11 is a standard Windows solution  that can co-exist with other Windows applications
• Improves system reliability and performance
• The PDP-11 system and application software are stored as disk image files, allowing for easy version control and backups.

Note: Application source code is typically not required for the TPS Migration. TPS Conversion and Translation are not required!

Technical Specifications

COBRA 11/SXP
The COBRA11/SXP is running under Windows/NT/2000 and occupies one PCI slot. It has a writable control store, FPGA implementation of the PDP1 architecture with 4 MBytes of tightly coupled and zero wait-state memory. the COBRA1000/SX includes FPJ11® compatible hardware floating point. On-card x86 microprocessor rapidly processes "virtual" I/O instructions. Qbus®/Unibus® Bus support logic for non-emulated devices is provided on-board with connector to wide bandwidth fibrechannel adapter.

COBRA 11/DXP
Similar to the COBRA 11/SXP with double the speed. Performance equivalent 2 time the DCJ-11® and 100% of FPJ-11

COBRA 11 /TXP
Similar to the COBRA 11/SXP with triple the speed. Performance equivalent 3.8 time the DCJ-11® and 130% of FPJ-11

COBRA 11 /QXP
Similar to the COBRA 11/SXP with five time the speed. Performance equivalent 4.5 time the DCJ-11® and 130% of FPJ-11

Fibrechannel Adapter - Legacy Interface Card

The Dual-height card plugs into the PDP-11 Qbus/Unibus backplane. The fibrechannel cable plugs into the Qbus/Unibus logic connector on COBRA-11 card. The I/O Adapter logic provides Programmed I/O and DMA access to "real" Qbus/Unibus compatible controllers (those not otherwise emulated). 32 MB/sec transmission meets most wide bandwidth application requirements. FCC/CE certifiable.
